Psychiatry

Our consultant psychiatrists provide assessments and ongoing care, available in-person or via telehealth.

Psychiatrists at Yarra Clinic provide thoughtful, evidence-based care for people experiencing a wide range of mental health concerns. Our psychiatrists combine medical expertise with an understanding of the psychological and social factors that influence wellbeing.

Appointments may involve assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning, which can include medication, recommendations for psychotherapy, or a combination of both. Treatment is collaborative, and decisions are made carefully with each person’s needs and preferences in mind.

Our psychiatrists work closely with our psychologists and GPs to ensure that care is coordinated and consistent. For many people, this integrated approach helps support lasting improvement rather than short-term symptom relief.

What to expect

Your first appointment typically involves a comprehensive assessment of your mental health history, current symptoms, and relevant background. Your psychiatrist will discuss possible explanations for your difficulties and outline a treatment plan.

If indicated, follow-up appointments may focus on medication management, therapy, or ongoing review of your progress.

To arrange an appointment, please visit our Contact page or speak with your GP about a referral to Yarra Clinic.

Once-off Assessment

Medicare Item 291

A 291 assessment is a single consultation with a psychiatrist, designed to provide a thorough evaluation of your mental health. Following the appointment, the psychiatrist provides a comprehensive report to your GP, including recommendations for ongoing care. Your GP will continue to manage your treatment, rather than the psychiatrist providing ongoing care. This pathway is ideal for individuals who require specialist input, but will continue their treatment primarily under the guidance of their GP.

Assessment & Ongoing Care

Medicare Item 296

A 296 assessment begins with an initial appointment with a psychiatrist, providing an in-depth understanding of your mental health needs. Unlike a 291 assessment, this pathway includes ongoing psychiatrist-led care, with follow-up appointments scheduled as required to monitor progress and adjust treatment. This pathway is suited to individuals who may benefit from continued specialist management.
